Introduction

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Camberwell, the College of Arts Student Accommodation at 240 Camberwell Rd SE5 stands as a testament to modern academic architecture. Overseeing the revitalisation of an area steeped in artistry and history this project was a collaborative effort between Stephen Marshall Architects and Hollybrook for the University of the Arts London.

Quality & Services

Our involvement in this project emphasised precision and craftsmanship:

  • Aluminium Cladding: We provided and installed the aluminium cladding, adding a modern touch while ensuring durability and enhanced aesthetics.
  • SFS (Structural Framing System): Our expertise ensured that the structural integrity of the building was not just maintained but accentuated, providing a robust backbone to the building complex.

Comprising six floors, the new student accommodation and studio building boasts louver cladding that optimises natural daylight. This facility also features a ramped entrance leading to the lower ground floor and a communal courtyard.

Adding to the aesthetic and functional appeal of the location, Stephen Marshall took on the interiors of the teaching spaces and the remodelling of the original 1964 Brutalist building. This renovation included revamped spaces for workshops, libraries, and an auditorium, all set to be utilised by the incoming university community.

Further highlighting the project's scope, Hollybrook played a pivotal role in transforming what was once a self-storage warehouse. Despite the logistical challenges, the construction never interrupted the university's operations. Through modular and precast building methods, Hollybrook expedited the project timeline, ensuring minimal disruption while upholding their exacting quality standards.

The finished development comprises 264 student bedrooms, a work zone, common room facilities, an energy-efficient basement centre, an outdoor art exhibition courtyard, and an impressive building with a triple-height basement lecture theatre. Furthermore, it adds a massive 68,000 sq. ft. of new academic space, seamlessly connecting to the existing structure on Peckham Road.
